Climate literacy rooted in place, wonder, and student agency.

Abstract

In coastal communities like New Orleans, flooding, water pollution, and displacement are lived experiences. This paper shares an interdisciplinary, NGSS-aligned placemaking unit co-designed to engage fourth-grade students in community-centered climate change education. By weaving together science, art, literacy, and engineering, the curriculum helped students explore water pollution through local contexts—designing their own water filters and fostering a sense of agency. This study offers a compelling model for how climate literacy can begin early, through wonder, connection, and community-rooted problem-solving.
